The XOXO Group

Cancer survivors celebrate survivorship and spread love to cancer patients.

In 2009, eight cancer survivors created a support group with the goal of celebrating their survivorship by volunteering to help others. Member, Bernice Weiss, came up with the unique name, “XOXO” because they appreciated the symbolism of “spreading love,” while helping cancer patients.

The XOXO Group has been preparing scrumptious and healthy breakfasts for guests at Editha House for the past two years. Ten-year cancer survivor, Marilyn Harbster, explains why they love volunteering at Editha House:

“We love deciding what to serve when we volunteer and work as a team. The breakfasts are always well-attended, and the guests are very appreciative. Often, the guests stay around after to share their stories and listen to others. It’s a great community.”

Marilyn’s brother, Wayne Matthews, was also a friend of Editha House. For many years, Wayne worked at Baker Bros. Nursery where he helped Phoenicians beautify their lives with plants and flowers. He generously donated his time as well as dozens of plants, flowers, vegetables, herbs and trees. Wayne passed away in June 2014 and a plaque – Wayne’s Garden – can be found hanging over the box garden at Editha House, dedicated in his memory.

Born outside of Boston, Marilyn grew up in Phoenix. She can be counted on to give the House lots of fresh flowers and veggies each fall and spring. Marilyn is retired and currently takes care of her 92-year old mother, Norma, which she finds “challenging but worthwhile.”

For Marilyn, volunteering is sharing her experience with guests and caregivers. She wants those going through a similar journey to feel the hope and lov she knows is possible.

“One of my favorite memories is the Volunteer Luncheon in May 2014 hosted at Editha House. Meeting other volunteers was inspiring. The staff at Editha House makes you feel very special. As a survivor, it’s all about what you can do for someone else.”

Marilyn shares the Group’s feelings about volunteering by saying:

“What we get and what we give is pure joy. Volunteering with the XOXO Group is our link to that joy.”
