A Tribute to Caregivers

These three caregivers each stayed at Editha House for over three months, putting their life on hold to provide crucial care to patients recovering from cancer or lung-disease.

Caregiver Mel Huntspon

When Mel Huntspon’s wife, Olga, was diagnosed with leukemia, Mel knew they were in for a ride. Olga’s diagnosis led to extensive chemotherapy and, in time, to a stem cell transplant.

Olga was required to stay close to the hospital and her doctor, Dr. Matthew Ulrikson, heartily recommended staying at Editha House.

Olga’s husband Mel, took a tour of the House and remarks that he was “extremely impressed.”

“Everything was very clean, and I found the staff very friendly.”

Mel Huntspon, Caregiver

Mel had no previous experience as a caregiver, but he soon came to realize that by being his wife’s caregiver, he was able to ensure that she was getting the best care possible. He also learned that being a caregiver meant that he carried the frustration of not being able to do more for his partner.

Mel and Olga stayed at Editha House for two months and particularly enjoyed the meals that were prepared by volunteers. “Coming home to the aroma of a healthy homemade meal, after a difficult day in treatment and fighting traffic, was a real gift.”

“Caregiving is critical to recovery,” says Mel. “Make sure your heart is in it and don’t hesitate to accept help from family members. Self-care is important too, so that you stay healthy. Getting together with friends and playing a round of golf every once in a while is helpful too!”
