Dr. Nader Sanai is a world-class neurosurgeon at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. His clinical practice, located at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, is devoted to patients with tumors of the brain and spine.

Patients travel from all over the world, seeking treatment under Dr. Sanai’s care. On average, Dr. Sanai performs five to ten brain tumor operations per week and is one of the busiest intraoperative stimulation mapping neurosurgeons in the United States. He is part of a medical team that on average treats more brain tumors than anywhere in else the United States.

Dr. Sanai is also Director of the Ivy Brain Tumor Center where he oversees brain tumor research, enabling the program to pioneer new clinical trials for brain tumor patients. He spends three days between the clinic and operating room, and the other two days focused on his lab and research.

The Barrow’s Institute offers a Second Opinion Program where a patient or physician can submit a request regarding a previous diagnosis or proposed procedure. Dr. Sanai’s office offers this unique service to his patients due to his extensive research and specialized medical equipment. He has operated on many tumors that were previously deemed inoperable.

Dr. Sanai’s team consists of a Lead Medical Secretary, Sam, a Medical Secretary, Kathy, and a Registered Nurse Navigator, Jackie. Jackie started at Barrows in the Neurological ICU, and now guides Dr. Sanai’s patients through their entire treatment process from the initial consultation to post-op care.

Sam handles all surgery scheduling and makes sure all consent forms are signed. She is also the person who refers guests to Editha House and works to place patients in clean, safe, and comfortable housing.

Kathy runs the clinic, schedules MRI’s, and follows up with referrals placed from Dr. Sanai’s office to other medical offices to ensure they get the appointments they need.  She is a great resource for all patients.

Dr. Sanai and his staff share a strong bond with patients that is clearly evident. The impact that his office has on patients goes beyond the cutting-edge technology and top-of-the-line treatment options offered at Barrows. We asked Sam and Jackie what makes Dr. Sanai’s office so special.

“Dr. Sanai’s heart is really in this,” says Jackie. “He is devoted to finding a cure for brain cancers. His attitude trickles down to all the staff. We work as a cohesive unit and are very focused.” Sam added, “He is very passionate about what he does and it is clear to see.”
